portraits by Maarit HÄnninen

I am currently open for commissions. Please scroll down to the bottom of this page for instructions! If you'd like to order something that's not listed below, please feel free to send me a query.

I create realistic portraits of human and animal subjects with pencil, watercolors/ink and oil paint. On this page you will find information, prices and some samples of my previous work.

All of my portraits are done by using archival quality materials in order to ensure long lasting results. I pay close attention to the source of the materials, preferring suppliers that are awarded with environmental and social certificates.

Graphite Pencil

The trusty old pencil is my personal favorite! I like the freedom and the flexibility that it offers, and the range of techniques available. The contrast of dark grey on white background and the rawness of the strokes - these are the qualities that I enjoy the most in visual arts.

MATERIALS

The paper that I mostly use is smooth, off-white, sturdy paper (approximately 220 gsm / 135 lb). The off-white color of the paper gives the drawing a beautiful, natural look. To prevent yellowing and brittling, I always use acid-free paper for my portraits. The drawing is finished with a protective layer of high quality fixative which also prevents smudging.

Care tips: Keep the drawing in room temperature, out of direct sunlight, and avoid high humidity and contact with acidic materials. For best results the drawing should be kept inside a glass frame.

Watercolors (Aquarelle) / Ink

Many watercolor artists use this medium for its unpredictable, flowing nature, letting the wet paint find its own way on the paper. Although this technique can produce some fantastic results, I prefer having more control over the medium by using less water in order to achieve a more accurate, crisp finish.

Materials

For watercolor paintings I use heavier (300 gsm / 140 lbs) smooth or slightly textured, cold pressed paper. I use only acid-free paper, in order to prevent yellowing and brittling. The paints are high quality, light-resistant watercolors with gum Arabic binder.

Care tips: Keep the drawing in room temperature, out of direct sunlight, and avoid high humidity and contact with acidic materials. For best results the drawing should be kept inside a glass frame.

Oil Paint

This is a relatively new acquaintance to me, and I'm beginning to understand why it is often being considered "the king" of all mediums. The vibrancy of the colors combined with the durability of the medium makes this a perfect choice for those who want their newly acquired art piece to last in top condition to the next generations!

Materials

I use premium quality 360 gsm / 245 lbs, acid-free, 100% linen canvas with 12,5 x 125 threads per cm2. The canvas is primed by hand, and stretched on strong pinewood frame. The piece is painted with high-quality, light-resistant oil paints, linseed oil, and environmentally safer solvents. The painting is finished with a protective layer of matte varnish.

Care tips: Keep the painting in room temperature, out of direct sunlight, and avoid high humidity and contact with acidic materials. The painting should not be placed near kitchens, or places where it could come to contact with smoke or grease. Dust the painting with a soft brush. Do not use water or any chemicals for the cleaning. For more thorough cleaning, please seek the help of a professional.
