This is me
I'm Maarit Hänninen, an Amsterdam-based portrait artist and printmaker, originally from the Finnish Lapland.
I've always had a soft spot for crafting and getting my hands dirty. However, it wasn't until my mid-twenties that I started pursuing visual arts: at first by just doodling with a pencil, and later on, in 2012, by participating in a one-year course at Liminka School of Art, Finland, studying painting, sculpting and print making. The school gave me not only experience with different mediums and techniques, but also inspiration to start developing my style and going a step further with my pursuit of art and design.
Due to my cultural and geographical roots, nature and animals have always been close to my heart. This affection has led me to contemplate the relationship between urban dwellers and nature, and through my art I strive to portray this connection, often using feminine themes to visualize the beauty of nature.
My work is characterized by refined details. In addition to realistic commission portraits, my new passion lies in linocut printmaking, both in the design of the piece and the crafting of the print plates. Through printmaking I feel more freedom to play around with compositions, experiment with different concepts, and draw inspiration from my personal experiences.
I am always open for commissions, collaborations and licencing. If you would like to inquire about these opportunities, or just to say "hi", please feel free to get in touch by sending an inquiry through the Contact page.
